Your Guide to ECO4: Fully Funded Energy Efficiency Measures

A guide
What is
ECO4?

What is ECO4?

ECO4 is the fourth phase of the Energy Company Obligation (ECO) scheme in the UK, administered by Ofgem, aimed at reducing carbon emissions and tackling fuel poverty. Under this scheme, large energy suppliers support the delivery of lifetime savings by installing energy efficiency measures in homes across the UK.

Available ECO4 Measures

What is ECO4

Solar Photovoltaics

Solar panels generate free electricity from sunlight, significantly reducing energy costs and carbon emissions. A typical installation takes 1-3 days and requires minimal maintenance.

What is ECO4

Air Source Heat Pumps (ASHPs)

ASHPs are a renewable energy technology providing heating by extracting heat from outdoor air. They offer efficient heating solutions, reduce energy bills, and lower carbon footprints. Installation typically takes 3-5 days.

Find more information about ASHPs on the Energy Saving Trust website here.

Insulation Types and Benefits

  • Internal Wall Insulation: Enhances energy efficiency by adding insulation material to the interior surface of external walls. Installation takes 1-3 weeks.
  • Loft Insulation: Reduces heat loss through the roof, improving winter warmth. Installation takes 1-2 days.
  • Cavity Wall Insulation: Fills the cavity between inner and outer walls, using polystyrene beads. Installation takes 1-2 days.
  • Underfloor Insulation: Adds insulation beneath floorboards, effective for homes with suspended timber floors. Installation takes 2-3 days.
  • Room in Roof Insulation: Insulates converted roof spaces to prevent heat loss. Installation takes 1-2 weeks.

Boiler Upgrades

Upgrading to a modern, energy-efficient boiler can have a substantial impact on reducing energy consumption and heating costs. Modern boilers operate more efficiently, providing better heat output and reliability compared to older models. This upgrade is crucial for homes with outdated or inefficient heating systems.

What is ECO4

Window and Door Upgrades

Installing energy-efficient windows and doors is an effective way to reduce heat loss and improve the overall comfort of your home. These upgrades enhance thermal insulation, reduce drafts, and contribute to lower energy bills. Additionally, energy-efficient windows and doors can improve security and reduce noise pollution.

Who’s Eligible for ECO4 Funding?

Eligibility for the ECO4 scheme is based on several criteria:

  • Energy Efficiency: The current energy efficiency rating of your property.
  • Benefits: Automatic eligibility if receiving certain benefits like Pension Credit, Child Tax Credit, Working Tax Credit, or Universal Credit (see full list here).
  • Income: Means-tested assessment of household income (have a gross annual income under £31,000).
  • Property Type: Certain types of properties, including those with solid walls, inefficient heating systems, or located in fuel-poor areas.
